December 22, 2017 - County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced that the Fulton Avenue Drawbridge, located along the border of Mount Vernon and Pelham Manor, is now open to motorists and pedestrians as construction nears completion. The bridge has been closed since January 4, 2017, as part of a bridge rehabilitation project to eliminate the need for interim and emergency repairs that have plagued the bridge for years.
“The rehabilitation of the Fulton Avenue Bridge solves a problem that has plagued Westchester motorists for years, and just in time for Christmas,” Astorino said. “As a major initiative under the county’s $1 billion investment in capital projects over the last five years, the Fulton Avenue Bridge project will make it easier to get around Westchester and hopefully take some of the stress out of the busy lives of the people who use the Pelham Parkway.”
The $14.8 million bridge rehabilitation project, which created approximately 148 FTE jobs, was performed by E.E. Cruz and Company, Inc. Work performed on this project includes a major steel, electrical and mechanical rehabilitation, replacement of the steel bridge deck, steel stingers, sidewalk panes, both approach spans, the operator’s area, and associated electrical components. A new emergency generator was installed to operate the bridge in the event of a utility power failure using a new emergency span drive.
River dredging activity unrelated to the bridge project will result in weeknight closures on the bridge now through December 31 from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. During the weeknight closures, a detour route will be posted following Pelham Parkway, Boston Post Road, Provost Avenue, South Third Avenue and South Columbus Avenue. As an alternative route, motorists can use the Hutchinson River Parkway between Boston Post Road (Route 1) and Sandford Boulevard.
