To them, it’s a job, a calling for public service. Westchester County Executive George Latimer is encouraging Westchester residents to take time out on Oct. 28 and thank a local first responder on National First Responders Day.

Latimer said: “Whether career or volunteer, these men and women risk their own lives, put the safety of others above their own to faithfully executive their duties and serve their communities. We thank them not only today, but every day, for going above and beyond and doing more than just their job. They are truly our heroes.”
Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Commissioner Richard G. Wishnie said: “Today we celebrate National First Responders Day by recognizing the heroes among us. With selfless dedication, professionalism, and extraordinary courage, first responders meet the challenges of crisis each and every day. Today is a day set aside to say thank you for being there when help is needed, often in life threatening circumstances.”
Westchester County Police Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason said: “On the occasion of National First Responders Day, I would like to thank the men and women of the Westchester County Police for the exemplary job they do every day. From routine calls to major accidents and incidents, from crimes in progress to significant emergencies, our officers respond to more than 100,000 calls for service every year. I am grateful to County Executive Latimer for his ongoing support of our department. I am grateful also to our fellow first responders from police, fire and EMS agencies across Westchester that partner with us regularly to keep the people of Westchester safe.”
