Joining second graders from William E. Cottle Elementary School in Tuckahoe, County Executive George Latimer kicked off the second year of the “Westchester Loves to Read” initiative.
In an effort in promote reading at a young age, the “Westchester Loves to Read” initiative is open to students County-wide in grades pre-k to grade 5. This reading incentive initiative asks students to read at least 300 minutes per month from October to April. Students that successfully complete each month, which equates to roughly 10 minutes a day, and return the completed log will receive a free to pass to Playland Park’s Opening Day.
It’s as simple as that. Read. Log. Win.
Latimer said: “This program is designed to give a fun incentive to kids to continue reading and is meant to serve as a supportive action to all of the programs that exist right now in our public school system. Playland represents fun and we are aiming to attach the concept of fun to the concept of reading.”
Tuckahoe Union Free School District Superintendent of Schools Carl Albano said: “We sincerely appreciate George Latimer visiting our school and providing this wonderful incentive to assist us in our goal of turning each and every child into a lifelong reader.”
William E. Cottle School Principal, Mr. John Morash, said: “Our Cottle teachers do a phenomenal job each and every day continuing to develop our students’ love of reading. Mr. Latimer’s Westchester Loves to Read program is another wonderful way to start children on the road to being lifelong readers.”
