Dec. 16 - Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino along with the Department of Planning and the county’s Soil & Water Conservation District recently presented the third annual Soil and Water Conservation Achievement Awards, which recognize activities and projects that promote the conservation, management and restoration of soil and water resources in Westchester County. The awards ceremony was held in the County Office Building in White Plains on Tuesday, December 8.
“Each of the winners have contributed to the terrific quality of life we enjoy here in Westchester, which we know is heavily based on our parks, open spaces and natural environment,” Astorino said.
A five-member panel, representing the District’s Board of Directors, reviewed the nominees and selected three winners for the achievement award.
Recipients of the Soil and Water Conservation Achievement Award are:
- The Great Healthy Yard Project of Katonah for Environmental Education
- Pound Ridge Garden Club for Rain Garden at Moat Family Green
- City of Yonkers for Saw Mill River Daylighting at Mill Street Courtyard
“The District addresses a wide range of concerns—such as improving water quality and applying best stormwater management practices to help control stormwater runoff, and advocates these issues through educational outreach. These three projects have advanced these good practices of environmental resource conservation,” said board chair Jan Blaire.
The Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District was created in 1967 to develop and carry out a conservation program for soil, water and other natural resources. Environmental professionals from the Westchester County Department of Planning provide support to the seven-member Board of Directors.
