Job seekers – Are you spending big bucks on resume specialists? Microsoft Office tutorials? Career Web sites? If so, you may be wasting your money. The Westchester County One-Stop Employment Center offers all of these services and more for free.
While the unemployment rate in Westchester County has dropped from 7.3 to 6.7 percent in the past year, the job market is still extremely competitive. It’s important that job seekers today come fully equipped with a strong and diverse skill set in order to stand out. From a well-written resume to strong computer skills, employers are looking for tailored individuals who can get the job done. You can find information about all of programs One-Stop Employment has to offer on its Web site. In September, the Web site will be fully operational and users will be able to create personalized job profiles and communicate with employers.
Recognizing that putting together the right package is not an easy task for job seekers, the Westchester County One-Stop Employment Center offers a wide-range of free workshops and resources to assist with the process. With centers located in Mount Vernon, Peekskill, White Plains, as well as a full service Web site, the One-Stop is the place for job seekers to prepare for, find and keep jobs.
The One-Stop centers offer a variety of workshops including introduction to computers, resume writing, MS Excel and Word, effective interview technique training and how to maintain a job and office etiquette seminars. An estimated 8,000 customers of all ages attend each month.
In addition to skill-enhancing workshops, job seekers have been able to learn how to search for jobs and upload their resumes on the web.
Workshops and seminars aren’t the only free services provided; each center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, which is available to both job seekers and businesses. All of the five centers have computers, Internet access, telephones, fax machines, copiers, scanners, and printers.
The One-Stop are also a resource for businesses that are looking to develop their workforce. Employers are welcomed to advertise job openings, hold interviews, screen prospective employees, hold job fairs, provide customized training to current employees and more.
