Keeping White Plains beautifulCounty Executive Robert P. Astorino recently thanked the supporters of the White Plains Beautification Foundation and commended the group for the great job it does in keeping White Plains a garden city.

Starting out 43 years ago with just 10 gardens, the program has expanded to 59 gardens plus outdoor sculptures and landmark pieces that collectively give White Plains its distinctive character and identity. Some of these gardens are on county property.

Since 1965, supporters have collectively raised more than $3 million in private contributions so that this important work can continue. Astorino held the group up as an example of how a community organization can make such a difference without relying on any taxpayer dollars.

In his remarks, Astorino praised Mary Merenda, the president of the White Plains Beautification Foundation, and Barbara Vrooman, the chairman of the Adopt-a-Park Program, for their work.

"The work of the Beautification Foundation and Adopt-A-Park Program elevate the image of this city and this county in ways that all of our residents and visitors can appreciate and enjoy," he said.
