County Executive Astorino answering questions during the tele-town hallDid you participate in County Executive Robert P. Astorino's tele-town hall last week? If so, you were one of 20,629 who were on the line at some point during the hour-long event.

"I really enjoy these tele-town halls," said Astorino. "It is a way for me to speak directly to our residents, find out what is on their minds and tell them how county government is responding to their concerns."

This event on May 30, was the fourth "Ask Astorino" tele-town hall. Those who participated either were randomly called moments before the start of the event or they themselves called in directly to a phone number that had been widely publicized. The average time on the line of each caller was 10 minutes. Others participated via Facebook and Twitter.

In the course of the hour, Astorino took 13 questions on a variety of subjects, including housing, Glen Island Park, Playland, small businesses, economic development, pensions and more.

Listeners were also polled on three topics. Here are the questions and the answers received (percentages rounded off):

  • When the new Tappan Zee Bridge is built, should some form of mass transit be included? Yes, 73 percent; No, 27 percent.
  • What is the most pressing issue facing you and your family? Taxes, 58 percent; jobs, 23 percent; flooding, 6 percent; environment, 5 percent; daycare, 4 percent.
  • Do you support the county's efforts to keep the federal government from expanding the terms of the 2009 housing settlement? Yes, 74 percent; No, 21 percent; I don't know, 5 percent.
