July 20, 2011 -- Work will soon begin to rehabilitate about 3.3 miles of Pleasantville Road, following the approval by County Executive Robert P. Astorino last week.

The Department of Public Works has advised that this road, which has an annual daily traffic count of 14,068, is in need of rehabilitation to provide a safe roadway for the traveling public. This corrective maintenance will extend the life of the roadway at a lower cost than structural rehabilitation or reconstruction of the roadway at a later date.

"It is imperative that we move forward on projects to keep our roads safe," said Astorino. "This is one such project. Doing this work now will save us money in the long run."

There are two segments of Pleasantville Road that are the focus of the project: a 2.2-mile stretch from South State Road to Bedford Road in the villages of Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville and the Town of Mount Pleasant; and a 1.1-mile-stretch from North State Road to the Ossining Village line in the Village of Briarcliff Manor.

Last week Astorino approved a $520,000 bond for the design phase of the project that will take 6-9 months to complete. As the project moves forward, Astorino will then go back to the Board of Legislators for approval of the construction phase, which is expected to cost $5 million.

The work will involve milling and resurfacing of the pavement, repair and adjustment of catch basins and drainage structures, installation of bus pads and concrete curbs and installation of new traffic islands and pavement markings. The construction phase will take approximately nine months to complete.
