FEMA extends Sandy claim deadlineWestchester residents and business owners will have until March 29 to file for federal assistance for damages associated with Hurricane Sandy under another 30-extension announced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

County Executive Robert P. Astorino was informed that FEMA and New York State have agreed to a third 30-day extension allowing people affected by the storm additional time to file claims and loan applications. The new registration deadline is March 29.

The county encourages residents who have sustained losses due to Hurricane Sandy, to register with FEMA even if they have insurance. Individuals should register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or if using a smartphone or tablet, go to m.fema.gov or download the FEMA app.

Residents may also call (800) 621-3362. For those with speech or hearing disabilities, use the TTY number (800) 462-7585. People who use 7-1-1 Relay or Video Relay Servies should call (800) 621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate 7 a.m. - 1 a.m. EST, seven days a week until further notice.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

Hurricane Sandy caused more than $42 million in damages to county-owned facilities alone. It also damaged public infrastructure and private property in every municipality in the county. Westchester and its municipalities are eligible to seek federal reimbursement for damages and other costs associated with the storm.
